Dania Beach, Florida
Dania Beach has stoically faced intermittent adversity ever since it was incorporated about 100 years ago. The original name was Modello and it was one of the first townships to be established in the area. The name was changed to Dania in honor of Danish families who settled here. A 1926 storm destroyed much of the town.
Dania Beach suffered greatly during the Great Depression, and people were victims of corrupt management of public funds. There was a modicum of recovery through tomato cultivation. Dania Beach shipped enormous loads of the red fruit through the newly established rail network and made a name for quality tomato paste as well. However saline deposits ruined the soil and ended the city’s prosperous encounter with this form of agriculture.

A Dania Beach family experimented with antiques, and this proved to be a saving grace for the entire community. The city has more than 100 antique stores even today and has acquired an enviable reputation for being a must for every serious collector. Most of the shops are charmingly sited in the premises of what used to be the County’s first cinema theatre. The image of Dania Beach as a place for antique shopping sits well with its architectural display of design excellence. Art Deco buildings, mansions from the Mediterranean Revival School, and the best of the Greek Revival School, reign over the streets of Dania Beach as though it were a living museum of classic buildings.
Dania Beach has 9 Parks apart from the water-front. The latter has been upgraded to face frequent storms that visit Dania Beach. The city has learned well from the havoc created by inclement weather and heavy seas that are common in this part of the US coast. Dania Beach residents enjoy excellent fitness and outdoor recreation amenities at its Parks and the Beach. Rodeo, football, Jai-Alai, and hockey are all popular pastimes in Dania Beach. The Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park, a 250-acre barrier island between the network of inland waterways and the Ocean, is an important and immediate neighbor of Dania Beach.

The International Game Fish Association has a Museum in Dania Beach. It is an important repository of information on the best places for the sport and of record catches and landings. The Museum’s educational programs are especially popular with young people, and the Institution has made important contributions to setting uniform international standards for the sport of fishing.
Shipbuilding, repairs of various genres of craft, and extensive warehouse facilities are major industries and sources of jobs for people who live in and around Dania Beach. It is a key hub of inland water transport in the area, and its waterfront makes up part of the large Port Everglades. The city also has an enormous collection of stores that deal in all kinds of fishing equipment.
Dania Beach is conveniently near Fort Lauderdale Airport and has a slew of inexpensive places in which visitors can stay. The city has a pleasing array of dining places and eateries as well. A Casino ship makes short trips in the Ocean beyond US territorial waters.
