The City of Avon Park was founded in1886 after Connecticut native, Oliver Martin Crosby first settled in the area in 1884. He came to study and write about swamps and their snake, alligator and mosquito companions. Other Americans searching for a quiet retreat followed and an English native suggested the name “Avon” since it reminded her of Stratford-on-Avon. Avon Park was incorporated as a town in 1913 and gained city status in 1925. Today, this 10.06 square miles city is home for ten-thousand seven hundred residents, a young multicultural population that enjoys the many employment and recreational opportunities in the community. Avon Park is a family town with family values reflected in schools; youth sports activities, churches, and homes. More than 40 churches covering a wide range of denominations serve the community and citizens here. There are over 30 service and civic organizations that thrive with volunteer support as well.
