About the Community
This coastal city of over one-hundred-fifty thousand residents was incorporated in 1925. Earlier the area was a vast undeveloped wilderness, with pine forests, palmetto plants, and tangled undergrowth of marshlands and mangroves. It was developed into a tropical paradise with palm trees and shrubs such as Bougainvillea, Pithecellobium, Hibiscus, Pandanus, Ixora, Poinsettias, Oleanders, Eucalyptus, Mangos, Citrus, and Avocado trees were planted and parks created. This beautifully planned city with its landscaped boulevards, harmonious Spanish and Moorish architecture, featuring arches, domes, balconies, red tile roofs, pastel-hued stucco wall, and tile floors was voted the “‘Diamond” of Florida’s Gold Coast.

The local Historic Preservation groups have worked to conserve the original Hollywood properties that have historical, architectural, and archaeological merits. The city has been divided into local historic districts and sites such as The Historic Hollywood Business District, Historic Lakes Section, etc. Stroll through the downtown area with its quaint sidewalk cafes, brick-lined walks, and unique boutiques, shops, and art galleries. Gourmets can delight in the excellent restaurants offering outstanding Italian Mexican, Chinese, Thai, Sushi, and Health Food restaurants. Beach lovers have access to over seven miles of white, sandy beaches, and “Blue Wave” Pristine Beaches. Each of the three beaches in Hollywood is unique. North Beach is a nature lover’s paradise with its heady combination of city, county, and state parks with innumerable nature and water activities. Enjoy jet skiing, scuba diving, windsurfing parasailing, diving, snorkeling, surfing, and fishing on the sparkling waters of the Atlantic. The nearby Anne Kolb Nature Center is a haven for nature lovers. Throughout the year local artists perform at the Hollywood Beach Theater and you can enjoy dancing under the stars on the Boardwalk.
The original inhabitants of the area, the Seminole Tribe have a reservation where you can catch a glimpse of their lives. This “Gateway to the Everglades” has alligator shows, arts & crafts, and a live history demonstration. Go on an expedition in the Seminole’s Billie Swamp Safari through more than 2,200 lush acres of the Big Cypress Reservation. Take an airboat ride or walk through the safari and you are sure to spot deer, water buffalo, bison, wild hogs, hawks, eagles, and alligators. Do not forget to visit the International Game Fishing Association/Fishing Hall of Fame and make the most of the kid’s discovery room, library, and virtual fishing.
