Inverness, Florida
Inverness is named for the Scottish town and like its inspiration is surrounded by lakes. This picturesque seven square mile town in Citrus County is like a Monet painting come alive with its with rolling hills, crystal clear lakes with lily pads floating on the surface and surrounded by great moss covered oaks and magnolias. Every color and variety of wild flowers brings the serene landscape alive. It is located approximately 20 miles north of Brooksville and approximately 60 miles northwest of Orlando.

The town is home to seven thousand four hundred multicultural people, many of who have retired to this sunny paradise. Inverness is in the Homosassa Springs metro area and is the county seat. There is plenty to do for the active, including golf, tennis, walking or jogging, biking, and visiting the many antique shops. The 22-mile long chain of freshwater lakes including the Cooter Lake and White Lake offer boating, diving, snorkeling, and matchless fishing.

Inverness houses the Citrus County Coastal Heritage Museum in a 1939 native lime rock building that was once home to the city hall, jail, and fire department. One can learn a lot about the way of life in the area in times gone by from a diorama of the downtown area in 1927. Do not miss the replica of an original fish house façade. The “Historic Tour of Crystal River” provides information on the late 1800s residences, the early 1900 depot, and the 1920s commercial buildings.

Fort Cooper State Park named for Major Mark Cooper was developed around a fort built during the Second Seminole Indian War. It saw action in 1836 and served as an observation post and stopover until the end of the war. Restoration of part of the palisade wall has been completed and the fort is the venue for a battle reenactment during Fort Cooper Days in April.
Hiking and biking are popular in the area with bikers making the most of the undulating parts of the countryside. They can rest and enjoy two lakeside parks with facilities. Kayaking in the many water bodies is a memorable experience. Walk in History is a downtown tour that brings to life all the historic buildings in the charming town of Inverness.
There is plenty of shopping too at the Inverness regional shopping center and Citrus Plaza Highland Square.
