Live Oak is the county seat of Suwannee County, east of Tallahassee, and exemplifies the free unspoiled spirit of the region. The community was named for the large shade tree that served as a community meeting place. This city of 7.6 square miles has a population of nearly 7000. The community has an average income below the state average but people here are joyous and make the most of what they have, particularly their talents.

Excellent education at the public schools, an impressive public library, the Suwannee River County Library, and good health services contribute towards a life that is healthy in mind and body. Vocational higher training is available at the local RIVEROAK Technical College. Shands at Live Oak is the local medical center that has been providing families of Live Oak and the surrounding communities with a variety of health programs and services since 1948.
Visitors can experience legendary southern hospitality particularly during the many festivals and events held each year including Live oak’s Christmas on the Square and Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park’s music festivals. Enjoy water sports and fishing on Lake Mary. The Suwannee County Fair is a great place to discover local crafts and produce, not to mention the food. The Suwannee County Historical Museum is located just north of the railroad tracks in Live Oak. The museum is housed in a historic Train Depot. Besides the well known telephone display, the museum features a recreation of a16th century Timucaun Indian Village and artifacts that contributed to the development of the region.

Live Oak is probably best known for the Spirit of Suwannee Music Park and campground that lies on 580 beautiful wooded acres down along the banks of Old Florida’s Suwannee River. There are fully equipped cabins and RV campsites as well as tent facilities. Make the most of the nearly 12 miles of nature trails, suitable for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and nature exploring. Be sure to bring a fishing rod along and try your luck on the dock on Rees Lake. The Campground/Music Park offers many year round activities. Rent a canoe from the Outpost and go canoeing down the Suwannee River, or visit the Park’s stables and spend the day horseback riding. Rent a bike and follow the trails or take a dip in the nearby Suwannee Springs. The music festivals are a great attraction and are popular with locals and tourists alike.

The Suwannee River State Park is located just four miles away and offers numerous activities and facilities all year round. The more adventurous can take a dip and discover the underwater caves, including some of the longest continuous systems in the world that provide spectacular cave diving experience. The rivers are excellent for fishing with numerous varieties of game fish.
