The City of Melbourne is located on east central Florida’s Space Coast. The City is in the southern portion of Brevard County and is just about an hour’s drive south of the Kennedy Space Center and 1-1/2 hours east of Disney World. About The Community
The city of Melbourne is spread over two locations; it is largely on the Florida mainland, but a small portion is located on a barrier island with the Indian River Lagoon separating the mainland from the island. The island is just a narrow strip of land that serves to separate the Lagoon from the Atlantic Ocean. It is believed that in the past, the Lagoon was connected to the Ocean but today, the only connection is by way of a handful of inlets. A manmade inlet, the Sebastian Inlet at the southern end of Brevard County is one of them. The barrier island is connected to the mainland by two four-lane, high-rise bridges – the Melbourne Causeway and the Eau Gallie Causeway, that span the Indian River Lagoon.
In 1969, the two separate communities of Melbourne and Eau Gallie merged and formed what we call the City of Melbourne today. The City encompasses approximately 38 square miles and almost 75% of the area is in use. The population was 81,468 in 2019 and it continues to grow at a modest rate each year. The Municipal government is doing an excellent job of providing essential services to the residents of Melbourne. Not only that, this municipality is responsible for providing drinking water services to residents of several other neighboring municipalities.

Melbourne boasts of a number of recreational attractions for its residents and visitors including two golf courses, an auditorium, a state-of-the-art civic center, tennis courts, and swimming pools. Do not forget to visit the Honor America’s Liberty Bell Museum and the Melbourne Military Memorial Park just next to it. This park was opened to the public after a Memorial Day, 2003, Dedication Ceremony. Veterans Bill Barnett and Ed Palmer conceptualized the park as a place for people to congregate and to remember those who have served, and a place to celebrate the glory of the American freedoms and rights.
The Eau Gallie Civic Center is a multi purpose building facility of sixteen thousand square feet in Melbourne’s old downtown Eau Gallie area, designed to meet various community needs. The facility provides space for classes, sports activities, meetings, and special events. Melbourne has two outstanding golf courses that provide opportunities for beginners and advanced golfers. They are both considered to be among the best public golf courses in Central Florida. A popular institution of higher education, Florida Institute of Technology is an independent technological university that provides quality education, furthers knowledge through basic and applied research, and serves the diverse needs of the area.
Melbourne is also celebrated for its vibrant arts and cultural scene, offering residents and visitors a wealth of experiences to explore. The historic downtown districts of Melbourne and Eau Gallie are home to unique shops, galleries, and eateries, showcasing the area’s local charm and creativity. The Eau Gallie Arts District (EGAD) hosts regular art walks, live performances, and festivals, providing a platform for regional artists and performers. Additionally, the Maxwell C.
