About The Community
Plant City is in the northeastern corner of Hillsborough County in the heart of Central Florida. It is an old city, rich in history and it was incorporated in 1885, just 16 years after the state was chartered. The city has grown over the past 110 years to its present size of 29 square miles.
Plant City’s original name was Ichepucksassa, after the Indian village that was originally located here. Most people found it impossible to spell or pronounce this name and the local Irish postmaster renamed the village Cork, after his home city in Ireland. In 1884, Henry B. Plant extended the South Florida Railroad to this town and in his honor, when the town was incorporated a year later; it was renamed after him as Plant City. People mistakenly think the name is derived from the rich agricultural community that surrounds it.
