Quincy, Florida
Just 20 miles west of Florida’s bustling capital, Tallahassee is Quincy, the county seat of Gadsden County. The beautiful historic town was named for John Quincy Adams. Settlers started living in the region soon after the United States acquired the Territory of Florida from Spain in 1821.
About The Community
Quincy was an agricultural community and tobacco was the main crop until the 1970s, when the industry declined. Since then they grow tomatoes, landscape nursery plants, and pine trees. Today almost 7000 people live here and nearly 65% are of African American origin. For decades, Quincy has earned the nickname “the Coca Cola town.” In the 1920s, Mark W. Munroe, president of The Quincy State Bank, advised his family and friends to invest in a little-known company called Coca Cola. They all became millionaires.
National Register Historic District of Quincy is a 36-block downtown area. The courthouse square has been a site for both government and commerce since 1827. Wander through the town and enjoy the beautiful architecture, the excellent stained and leaded glass of the antebellum, and turn of the century houses. Admire local art at several art galleries. The Quincy Music Theatre is the largest community theater in Florida specializing in musicals. Located in the Historic District, the theater hold exciting events regularly. The Gadsden Arts Center has a fine collection of artworks in various media, by regional and local artists and organizes shows throughout the year.
